Using the FIRE System for Electronic Filing
The FIRE system (Filing Information Returns Electronically) is the IRS' way for you to submit your 1099-s return electronically.
The FIRE system is located on the web at https://fire.irs.gov
If you have never filed electronically before you will need to obtain a "TCC" (Transmitter Control Code) code before you can do so. Do not wait until the last minute to obtain this code. You can file IRS form 4419 to apply for a TCC code.
Remember that it is your responsibility to check on the acceptability of your submission 1-2 business days after the initial submission.
The file that you need to submit in the FIRE system can be created in SherWare by choosing "Create 1099 Magnetic Media File" from under the 1099 Reports menu. If this is a correction be sure to mark the option to "Mark records as Corrected 1099s" when building the file.
If you file your 1099s electronically with the FIRE system you do not have to mail anything to the IRS. You will still need to send the 1099s to the individuals you have disbursed money to.
Note: If you have contacted SherWare support to file your 1099s then you do not need to obtain a TCC number. SherWare will include everything under our TCC number.
If you have previously filed with your own TCC number, and are now having SherWare file your data, please contact the IRS to cancel your existing TCC number. A return is expected each year for every assigned TCC number, so unless you notify them that you will no longer need that number, you may receive a message from the IRS later in the year warning that a return has not been filed.
